Inspect Metadata

Use metadata inspection to compare visible document properties with embedded XMP metadata and PDF information dictionary values.

PDF Auditor Metadata tab showing document metadata fields.

When to use it

Review metadata when validating document origin, dates, producer tools, title, author fields, or mismatches between metadata sources.

What to check

  • Title, author, subject, keywords, creator, and producer fields.
  • Creation and modification dates, especially when they conflict with the expected workflow.
  • Differences between document information and XMP metadata.
  • Empty, stale, or unexpected values before publishing or sharing a file.

Review steps

  1. Start with File Info to confirm the file and document overview.
  2. Open Metadata and compare document information with XMP values.
  3. Use Forensics if metadata conflicts with the file history or visible content.
